shape that traps water in wheel ruts. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clear and Maintain Ditches<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep roadside ditches free of leaves, sediment, and debris so water flows away smoothly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure ditches have the proper width and depth to handle heavy runoff without eroding the banks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stabilize steep ditch slopes with vegetation or rock lining to stop soil from washing into nearby lakes and streams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manage Culverts Properly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inspect culverts regularly and clear out any dirt, leaves, or blockages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect culvert inlets and outlets with rocks or riprap to prevent washout and erosion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace crushed, broken, or undersized culverts immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grade and Resurface Sensibly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grade the road <strong>once a year<\/strong> (ideally in the spring after the freeze-thaw cycle) to restore the proper crown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit grading speed to <strong>3 to 5 mph<\/strong> with the blade angled at 30 to 45 degrees to mix and cut materials properly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replenish surface material every few years using a quality gravel blend that contains enough sand and fine particles (binding fines) to pack tightly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Control Vegetation and Dust<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trim brush and trees along the road edges to let sunlight and wind dry the surface faster after rain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply dust suppressants like calcium chloride during dry summer months to lock in fine particles and prevent gravel loss. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further Exploration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review the complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dep\/land\/watershed\/camp\/road\/gravel_road_manual.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine DEP Camp Road Maintenance Manual<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read tips and updates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/maineroads.org\/page-239253\/13330400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine Alliance for Road Associations<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find local workshops through Maine Lakes Landowner Resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below you will find some resources to help maintain your gravel road.
